How To Buy A Bow Just Right For You
When the time comes to buy a bow, it can definitely be a challenge. The main areas of consideration are primary use, draw length, draw weight, total mass, arrow speed and bow length.
The problem is attempting to buy a bow which meets all of the criteria we have listed above to fit you. The question then becomes, can you buy one bow to meet all of your needs? The likelihood is that you will have to make some concessions during your purchase.
Concessions should never be made in the areas of bow mass, draws weight and draw length. Keep in mind though, where bow mass is concerned, the overall weight of the bow increases when you add a quiver full of arrows. If this addition makes the bow too heavy, you will not be able to hold it comfortably nor will you execute your shot with the proper form. On the other hand, a bow which is too light will be difficult to hold steady when aiming at your target.
Draw weight is an area where bow hunters attempt to gain faster arrow speeds by cranking the weight up on their bow. Having your bow at the proper weight will allow you to have a smooth, steady draw and eliminate any abrupt movements which might be seen by your target. Also, holding your bow at full draw will be much easier when it is set at a weight which is comfortable for you. The need to hold at full draw happens consistently when you are waiting for your trophy buck to give you the perfect shot. Keep in mind that you must also be able to draw this weight comfortably when you are wearing more layers during the hunting season.
Draw length is very important. A draw that is too long has your bow string hitting your arm; too short and your feeling all "bunched up." A final point to keep in mind is that if you are like most bow hunters in this country, you use only one bow, both for target shooting as well as hunting. If this is the case, it may be advisable to keep your draw length about one inch shorter than normal. This will help to compensate for all the clothing you will be wearing during the hunting season.
A recent trend among bow hunters is to buy a bow which is shorter. These bows have some definite appeal. They are lighter, faster and easier to maneuver, especially in a tree stand. The issue with this style of bow is they have a short draw back. This means it is most critical to make an accurate shot. They torque easily and are difficult to hold steady on your target. If you can, select a bow which is at least 38 inches in length from axle to axle.
Lastly, there is arrow speed. Some bow hunters consider this to be the most important factor when they buy a bow. We would caution you not to select arrow speed at the expense of accuracy when selecting your bow. Some bows are more "forgiving" than others. Think about it this way, hitting a buck with a slower moving arrow is better than missing with a faster moving one.

Is there a Technique for alligator hunting?
Ive gone for years and always seem to have a hard time, my usual hunting "style" is crouching on the bow of the boat with a harpoon and someon shining him with a spotlight. this process is dificult because the gators drop when we get about 15 feet away. Ive also tried running a large spinning reel with an ugly stick and 150lb braided line and casting on them from 50 yards or so, this is pretty good but their hide is so tough you dont even sink the hook, you just hold pressure and pray that he doesnt roll out of it. I use a 16 foot T top salt water boat and it works well. i dont have an air boat so i cant just run them over like some of these guys do. If anyone else knows of any easier methods i'd love to hear them!!
